Voice memos
Hold the mic in the message box, talk, and let go. You hear it back before you send it, and Walkie writes out what you said.
- iPhone · Android
- Free · Crew · Plus · Elite
Hold the microphone button in the message box, say what you need to, and let go. You can play it back before you send it, and Walkie writes out what you said so people can read it on a loud site. Nothing sends until you tap the send arrow.
Steps
Record and send
- Open the conversation, and the job tab the memo is about if there is one.
- Leave the message box empty so the microphone shows. Press and hold the microphone.
- Talk. To go hands-free, slide your finger up to Lock and let go.
- Let go (or, if locked, tap the stop button) to review it.
- Play it back, then tap the send arrow.
Change your mind
- While holding, slide left to Cancel to throw it away.
- In review, tap the X to discard it, or the round arrow to record it again.
Read or play a memo someone sent
- The memo shows in the conversation with the first three lines of what was said.
- Tap it to open the player, where you can scrub through it, read the whole thing and Translate it.
If it didn’t work
- Nothing recorded on a quick tap. You have to hold the microphone for a moment. A quick tap doesn’t start recording.
- “Microphone is off for Walkie.” Turn on the microphone for Walkie in your phone’s Settings, then try again.
- The memo vanished while you were recording. Leaving the app mid-recording throws the recording away. Record it again.
- The memo says “Couldn’t transcribe this memo”. Tap Try again. The audio still plays either way.
- The memo says “Nothing was said in this memo”. Walkie heard no speech in it.
- You’re offline. The memo waits on your phone and should send when you’re back online.
What Walkie can’t do
- A memo can’t be sent without the review step.
- A memo under one second isn’t kept.
- A memo can’t be recovered after you switch away from the app mid-recording.
- Record voice memos in the iPhone or Android app. The recorder saves to phone storage, so recording in a browser may not work.

Quick answers
- Does a voice memo send by itself when I let go?
- No. Letting go takes you to a review where you can play it back, and it only sends when you tap the send arrow.
- Is there a time limit on a voice memo?
- No. Memos under one second are dropped, and there's no maximum length.
- Do voice memos use my minutes?
- Writing out what you said is free. Translating a memo uses minutes, charged to the person who asks for the translation.
- Can I record hands-free?
- Yes. While holding the mic, slide your finger up to Lock, then let go and keep talking.
- Which job does a memo go under?
- The tab you had open when you recorded it: a job, or Activity.
- What's the difference between a voice memo and a voicemail?
- A voice memo is something you record in a conversation. A voicemail is a message you leave with Leave a message after a Walkie call isn't answered.
