Group calls and how many people can join

A call rings everyone in the conversation. The caller's plan sets how many can be on it; if the group is bigger, the call won't start.

Tapping the call button in a conversation rings everyone in it at once. The caller’s plan decides how many people the call can hold, counting the caller. If the conversation has more people than that, the call doesn’t start and nobody’s phone rings.

Steps

Start a group call

  1. Open the conversation with the people you want on the call.
  2. Tap the orange call button at the right end of the header. Everyone in the conversation rings.
  3. As people answer, each one gets a tile on the call screen.

Join a call you missed

  1. Open the conversation while the call is still going.
  2. Tap the live group call’s row in the feed. A screen opens showing who’s on the call.
  3. Tap Join call.

If it didn’t work

  • You see “Your plan covers calls with one other person.” with See plans. The conversation has more people than your plan’s call limit, so the call was stopped before anyone rang. The message reads the same on every plan, even when your limit is higher. Call from a smaller conversation.
  • You see “This call is full.” Every seat on that call is taken. Wait for someone to hang up, or ask the caller to start a new call later.
  • Someone’s phone didn’t ring. Check they’re still in the conversation, then see the article on calls that don’t ring.

What Walkie can’t do

  • A call can’t ring only some of the people in a conversation.
  • There’s no way to add a person to a call while it’s going.
  • There are no video calls.
  • In a browser, nothing rings while the Walkie tab is closed. Keep your phone for calls.
  • You can be on one call at a time. A second call that comes in while you’re on one is turned away as busy.
  • The caller’s plan sets the limit. Someone joining on a bigger plan doesn’t raise it.

Quick answers

How many people can be on one call?
Counting the caller: 2 on Free, 2 on Crew, 4 on Plus and 4 on Elite.
Whose plan decides the limit?
The plan of the person who starts the call. The people who join don't need a paid plan.
Can I call just some of the people in a group?
No. A call rings everyone in the conversation. To call fewer people, call from a conversation that has just those people in it.
I missed the ring. Can I still join?
Yes, on a group call that's still going. Tap the live call's row in the conversation, then tap Join call.
Is everyone on a group call charged minutes?
Yes. Every member of the conversation is charged the whole call, from ring to hang-up, including anyone who didn't join.
Can I add someone who isn't in the conversation during a call?
No. Add them to the conversation first, then start the call.
