Call someone who isn’t on Walkie
Walkie calls their regular phone number; they don't need the app. The call is recorded for you, and they hear a short notice that it's recorded.

Here's a quick one… calling anyone, right from Walkie.
Not everyone you call is on Walkie. You can still call them from Walkie... and the call still gets written up.
On Calls, tap search, then the keypad... and type the number. Or pick someone from your contacts.
The first time, Walkie checks your mobile with a quick call. It takes about thirty seconds... and you only do it once.
You'll see the number they'll see... your own mobile. Tap Call.
They hear a short notice that the call is recorded. Then you just talk.
Afterward, the call has its summary and its key points. Pick the project it was about... like any other call.
And you choose whether they get a text recap... Text them, Ask me, or Don't.
You can call anyone’s regular phone number from Walkie, and they don’t need the app. Calls to regular phone numbers work for US and Canadian (+1) numbers. The call is recorded, transcribed and summarized for you, and the person you call hears a short spoken notice that the call is recorded.
Steps
Check your mobile (once)
- Open You › Calls. Under Your numbers, Your mobile shows Confirmed or Check needed.
- If it shows Check needed, a box under it says “Your mobile needs a 30-second check”. Tap Check now.
- Tap Check your mobile. Walkie shows a code and calls your mobile.
- Answer that call, tap Keypad on your phone’s call screen and type the code.
- The sheet says “Your mobile is confirmed.” You only do this once.
If you try to call someone who isn’t on Walkie before this, Walkie walks you through the same check first. With a Walkie line, you may not need it: the line carries the call.
Make the call
- Open the Calls tab, or tap + at the top of it.
- Type a name or number in “Search or call anyone”. People who aren’t on Walkie show “Calling their phone”.
- Tap the person or the number. You can also tap Call on their contact card, or the call button at the top of your conversation with them.
- The first time you call someone, Walkie shows the number they’ll see. Tap Call.
- If you have a Walkie line that isn’t on hold, the first call asks which number to call from instead, with three cards: Auto, Your mobile and Walkie line. The card already picked is what they’d see anyway. Tap Call without changing it and Walkie saves nothing. Pick a different card and Walkie keeps it for that person. Cancel saves nothing either.
- When they answer, they hear the recording notice first, and neither of you hears the other until it ends. Your call screen says it’s telling them the call is recorded, and Mute is greyed out for those few seconds. You hear a tone when you can talk. The call screen also shows which number they see.
- After the call, if the conversation has no job connected, the call’s card offers File under a job. Pick a job, or tap Not about a job.
Auto means your mobile first, then your Walkie line once they’ve called it or had a text from it. The words under the cards say where to change it later, and “Hold the call button to use your other number once.” That means: in your conversation with them, touch and hold the call button at the top and pick Call from your mobile or Call from Walkie line. That one call doesn’t change their setting.
See which number they’ll see
Open your conversation with them. The line under their name says which of your numbers their phone will show: “Sees your Walkie line”, “Sees your mobile”, or “Sees your mobile (line on hold)”. While Walkie is still checking, it says Phone settings. Tap that line to open their calling sheet, titled “Calling” and their name. You can also open it from Conversation settings: tap their name at the top, then Phone settings under Only you.
Your default for everyone is in You › Calls, under Number they see. See Your Walkie line to change it.
Text them the summary after the call
Walkie can send the person you called a text message with a summary of the call. The app calls these recap texts; you may also know them as call recaps or summary texts.
- Choose in You › Calls, under After each call: Text them, Ask me or Don’t. It starts on Ask me. A sentence under the choice says what happens.
- To choose for one person, open your conversation with them and tap the line under their name. Their calling sheet opens, with After each call for just that person. While they follow your default, the choice is marked “your default”, for example “Ask me · your default”. Pick a different one to set it for just them.
- The first time, Walkie asks you to confirm the person agreed to receive recap texts from you. No recap goes out without that.
- The text goes out as soon as Walkie has written up the call. Until then, you can stop it from the call.
The You › Calls page doesn’t say which number a recap comes from. When Walkie knows, the person’s own calling sheet says it under After each call: “It comes from your Walkie line.” or “It comes from Walkie’s number.”
Text them yourself
In a conversation with someone who isn’t on Walkie, the message box doesn’t send texts. What you type is saved as a note in Walkie. The box says so, for example “Notes stay in Walkie. Marco doesn’t get a text.”
- Tap the chip above the box. It names them, for example “Text Marco from your phone”.
- Your phone’s own messaging app opens, addressed to them. Write your text and send it there. It comes from your own number, and nothing is posted in the Walkie conversation.
Call from your own phone instead
- Open their contact card and tap their phone number.
- Walkie asks Call from your phone? and says the call won’t be recorded in Walkie, and they see your own number.
- Tap Call from my phone to use your phone’s dialer, Call in Walkie instead for a recorded Walkie call, or Copy number to copy it.
If it didn’t work
- “That didn’t work.” or “We didn’t get the code.” during the mobile check. Tap Try again and type the code once the call connects. The call that reads the code is in English.
- They saw a different number than you picked. When Walkie can’t use the number you chose, it says why in one sentence on the first-call sheet, the call screen and their calling sheet. For a person named Marco, it’s one of these:
- “Your Walkie line is on hold, so Marco sees your mobile.”
- “You don’t have a Walkie line right now, so Marco sees your mobile.”
- “Your mobile needs a check, so Marco sees your Walkie line.” Tap Check now in You › Calls to fix it.
- “Your mobile hasn’t been confirmed in 45 days, so Marco sees your Walkie line.”
- “Their voicemail picked up.” Their voicemail or an answering machine answered. Walkie ends the call and records nothing. Tap Text to send them a message from your phone instead.
- The call won’t go through to a number outside the US or Canada. Outside calls only reach +1 numbers.
- The call cut off at one hour. Outside calls stop at one hour. Call again if you need more time.
- The recap didn’t send. The card on the call says “The recap didn’t send.” Tap Try again. If they replied STOP to a text Walkie sent, Walkie can’t send them recap texts again. Texts you send yourself from your phone’s messaging app aren’t affected and carry no STOP notice.

Quick answers
- Does the other person need Walkie?
- No. Walkie rings their phone like a normal call and they answer it the normal way.
- Do they get the recording or summary?
- No. They hear a short notice that the call is recorded, and they get a summary text, or call recap, only if they've agreed to texts from you.
- What number do they see when I call?
- Open your conversation with them: the line under their name says it, for example Sees your Walkie line or Sees your mobile. Your default is in You › Calls, under Number they see.
- If I type in my conversation with them, do they get a text?
- No. What you type there is saved as a note in Walkie, and they don't get a text. To text them, tap the chip above the box, for example Text Marco from your phone: it opens your phone's own messaging app.
- Can I call someone outside the US or Canada?
- No. Outside calls only reach US and Canadian (+1) numbers.
- Does an outside call use my minutes?
- Yes, the same way a Walkie call does. Its length, from ring to hang-up, comes out of your minutes. An outside call ends after one hour.
- Can I call them from my phone's own dialer instead?
- Yes. Tap their phone number on their contact card, and Walkie asks Call from your phone? first. Tap Call from my phone: that call isn't recorded in Walkie, and they see your own number.
- What if they join Walkie later?
- If they sign up with the number you called, you're asked to confirm it's the same person. Once you do, the calls and messages with that number become theirs too.
