Conversations and jobsCore Guide

How Walkie is organized

Conversations are the people you talk to. Each job you connect gets its own tab in the conversation, after Activity, which shows every message.

Walkie is built around conversations, one for each person or crew you work with. Inside a conversation, the first tab is Activity, which shows every message, and each job you connect gets its own tab after it. What you send on a job’s tab is filed under that job.

How it’s laid out

  • Five tabs along the bottom: Projects, Calls, Bulletin, Files and You. Your conversations live on Projects, under People.
  • Filters at the top of Projects: My Projects, Unread, Follow-ups, People and Lists. Tap one to switch what the list shows. My Notes isn’t a filter: it’s a conversation, in People with the rest.
  • The date at the top of Projects, Calls, Bulletin and Files opens your schedule. The weather next to the title opens the weather.
  • Kinds of conversation: one other person, a group, or My Notes, a conversation with just you in it. You can also have a conversation with someone you called on a regular phone number, and an office conversation if you connected your office’s Slack.
  • The tab row inside a conversation: the Jobs button on the left (it shows how many jobs are connected), then Activity, then one tab per connected job, then Add to a project at the end.
  • Activity shows the whole conversation. A message filed under a job still shows there, marked with the job’s name. A message sent on Activity itself isn’t filed under any job.
  • A job’s tab is one feed. There are no sub-tabs inside it. Messages, photos and files sent on that tab are filed under the job, and calls filed under the job show up in the feed.
  • Calls are filed by what was said, not by the tab you were on. See File a message or call under the right job.
  • Follow-ups are yours alone. Lists, notes and schedule items are shared with the conversation, and can be filed under one of its jobs.
  • One job, several conversations. The same job can be connected to your conversation with the electrician and your conversation with the owner. Each conversation keeps its own messages and files for the job, and people in one never see the other’s.
  • Finding jobs: tap My Projects at the top of Projects. A job in one conversation opens that conversation on the job. A job in two or more conversations opens the job’s sheet, so you can pick one.
  • An office conversation is different. Its first tab is Office notes, and its other tabs are your office’s channels, not jobs.
  • Renaming a job. The job’s owner and managers can rename it or change its address: open the job’s page, tap Project settings, then Name or Address. Everyone else sees “Only the owner or a manager can change this.”
  • Adding people. People are added to conversations, never to a job. On a job’s page, tap Project settings, then Add someone: it picks one of the job’s conversations and adds them there.

If it didn’t work

  • You don’t see any job tabs. No job is connected to that conversation yet. The chip in the message bar reads Add to a project; tap it to connect one.
  • A message isn’t on the job’s tab where you expected it. It was sent on Activity or on another job’s tab. Look on Activity, where every message shows with its job’s name. Only the sender can move it, and only in the first 3 minutes.
  • In My Notes, some of your jobs are missing from the row. My Notes shows only jobs that have something in them there. The rest are behind the item at the end of the row that counts them, such as “+4 more”.
  • Someone new can’t see earlier messages. That’s expected. People see messages sent from when they joined the conversation, not before.

What Walkie can’t do

  • A job has no sub-tabs of its own for calls, punch lists or notes. Everything for a job in a conversation is in its one feed.
  • You can’t add a person to a job directly. People are added to conversations, and a conversation’s jobs come with it.
  • Nobody but the job’s owner and its managers can change its name or its address.
  • Messages don’t move between conversations because they share a job. Each conversation’s messages stay in that conversation.

Quick answers

Do I need a separate group for each job?
No, keep one conversation per person or crew and connect each job you share with them. Each job gets its own tab in that conversation.
What is the Activity tab?
Activity is the first tab in every conversation. It shows every message in the conversation, and a message filed under a job carries that job's name.
Are calls filed under the tab I call from?
No, after a call Walkie files it under the job or jobs it heard talked about, from the jobs connected to that conversation. You can change that afterwards.
Are follow-ups shared with the job?
No, follow-ups are private to you. Lists, notes and schedule items are shared with the conversation.
Where is the list of every job I'm on?
On the Projects tab, tap My Projects at the top to see your jobs, newest activity first.
If a job is in two conversations, can each group see the other's messages?
No. Each conversation keeps its own messages, photos and files for that job, and only its own members see them.
